Abstract

The study aimed to assess the disaster risk preparedness of 397 respondents living in isolated areas of Zamboanga del Norte. The researchers utilized questionnaires that had been validated by a panel of experts. They sought permission from persons-in-authority, administered the questionnaire, conducted site interviews and observations. The data gathered were statistically treated, analyzed and interpreted. The study revealed that the highest educational attainment of the majority of the respondents was elementary level and majority of them were unemployed. Furthermore, the study found out that majority of the respondents are not prepared for the unpredictable outbreak of some disasters like tsunami, volcanic eruption, tropical cyclone, storm surge, floods, thunderstorm, tornado.  A significant difference existed on the preparedness of the respondents for the risks of disasters when grouped as to monthly income and length of residency. Thus, it is recommended that people in isolated areas in the province shall attain a higher level of education, employ themselves to have enough monthly income, acquire different media as sources of information, and know about the common disasters recurring in these places. The result of the study served as basis for formulating programs, conducting seminars and orientations on disaster preparedness among the residents in isolated areas in Zamboanga del Norte to reduce their risks in any natural and human-induced hazards.
