Determinants of the Functionality of Marine Reserves in the Visayas Area, Philippines
Keywords:

Statistical analysis of the information contained in a recent publication on the marine reserves in the Visayas, Philippines was done using cluster analysis and binary logistic regression to ascertain the determinants of the functionality or non-functionality of marine reserves in the area. A complete enumeration of the characteristics of 564 marine reserves in the area is available in the document. These characteristics are the basis for our analysis. Results revealed that among the characteristics identified, those that relate to the Management Dimension of each marine reserve (current manager, infrastructure support, monitoring and evaluation) contribute significantly to the functionality of a marine reserve. Marine reserves managed by non-government organizations are more likely to succeed than those managed by government entities. Likewise, it was found that in terms of the Biological and Physical Characteristics, marine reserves with healthy, heterogenous marine habitats stand a better chance of succeeding than those with degraded habitats.
