Perceived Influence of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in Education and Culture of Dapitanons
Abstract
This study aimed to know the perceived influence of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in education
and culture of Dapitanons in Dapitan City, year 2009.The Descriptive-Survey Method of Research and interviews were used to get the results based on the data gathered from the 398 respondents who were relatives of the 21 students of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Along with the respondents aged from 50-95. The statistical tool was ranking system and weighted mean. It was found out that the qualities of Dr. Jose P. Rizal were the following: giving importance to education, hardworking, perseverance and giving owns life for the sake of others. The concrete influences of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in education and culture of Dapitanons were the courage to obtain education despite poverty, having strong faith in God and patrons, love towards family, giving importance to nature by maintaining cleanliness at home and surroundings, thriftiness, bet the lotto draw and having won it, trading, establishing cooperatives and possessing positive outlooks in life. The qualities and personalities of Dr. Jose P. Rizal influenced too much in education and culture of Dapitanons according to knowledge, ability, emotional, beliefs, customs, civilization and heroism. Giving importance and having the courage to obtain education rank first in the result. Possessing strong faith in God and the belief that poverty is not a hindrance to
success.Dr. Jose P. Rizal serves as a good example to every Dapitanon. They can also
change their ways of living if they will only follow Rizal’s footsteps. Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s
four years stay in Dapitan influenced too much in education and culture of apitanons
according to knowledge, ability, emotional, beliefs, customs, civilization and heroism for he introduced to them the modern way of living which he learned from other countries. Dapitanons’ ways of lire were greatly reflected and influenced by Rizal. The natives saw his perseverance and were encouraged to improve their ways of living. Antecedent to the conclusive statement, the following recommendations are strongly recommended. First, the qualities of Dr. Jose P. Rizal must be inculcated to the students’ mind and heart for them to be good leaders of the future. Second, patronized, improve and give honor to Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s contributions and influences to Dapitanons education and culture. The local Government of Dapitan will conduct a program in relation to the celebration of “Handuraw Festival” to commemorate Rizal’s contributions to the lives of Dapitanons.
