ICE-ICE DISEASE OCCURRENCE IN SEAWEED FARMS IN BAIS BAY, NEGROS ORIENTAL AND ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE
Keywords:
carrageenophytes, ice-ice disease, Kappaphycus alvarezii, Eucheuma denticulatumAbstract
Incidence and degree of infection of four forms belonging to carrageenophytes, Kappaphycus alvarezii brown and green, and Eucheuma denticulatum brown and green were investigated in the established three farms in Bais Bay, Negros Oriental Philippines, on April 2007 to January 2008. Additional samples were also taken on December 2007 in Jose Dalman and Rizal, Zamboanga del Norte. Physical and chemical parameter like temperature, salinity, rainfall and tide level were taken to analyze their relationship with the disease. The incidence and degree of infection varied significantly between species, strain, time (months) and farms as revealed in the two way ANOVA analysis. K. alvarezii has higher incidence and infection, as well as the farm located near community and exposed mostly during low tide.
